Introducing the Most Powerful Women in the world 2022. Although Forbes published the list in 2022, it ranks their power in 2021. This year’s list was topped by Jeff Bezos’ former wife, Mackenzie Scott. US Vice President Kamla Harris is ranked second, and European Central Bank Head Christine Lagarde is ranked third.

Angela Merkel was the world’s most powerful woman from 2006 to 2020, missing only one year. Michelle Obama was ranked first in 2010, while Angela Merkel fell to fourth place.

Most Powerful Women in the world – MacKenzie Scott

MacKenzie Scott is a philanthropist, author, and the ex-wife of Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon. She received a 25% stake in Amazon as part of their divorce settlement.

She signed the Giving Pledge in May 2019, promising to give away at least half of her wealth over her lifetime.

Scott has given away approximately $12.7 billion to over 1,200 nonprofits since July 2020. Scott practices “no strings attached” giving, in which the nonprofits to which she donates have complete control over how the new funds are spent.

No. 2 Kamala Harris

On January 20, 2021, Harris became the first woman, first Black person, and first South Asian-American to serve as Vice President of the United States. She’s used to being the first: Harris was the first Indian-American woman elected to the United States Senate in 2016.

In 2010, Harris became California’s first African-American and first female attorney general. Harris is a native Californian who was born in Oakland to immigrant parents (her mom was from India and her dad was from Jamaica). Source: Forbes

No. 3 Christine Legarde

On November 1, 2019, Lagarde became the European Central Bank’s first female president. Lagarde faces a critical test as the head of European monetary policy: ensuring that the coronavirus pandemic does not wreak further havoc on the Eurozone.

Lagarde led the International Monetary Fund, which works to ensure the global monetary system’s stability, from 2011 to mid-2019. She was the first woman in that role.

Kamala Harris

Kamala Harris who is at No. 2 is identified as an Asian as she has roots in India. However, she was born and bred in the United States.

Tsai Ing-Wen

At No. 9 is Tsai Ing-Wen. Tsai was elected as Taiwan’s first female president (and the country’s first unmarried president) in 2016.

She has broken protocol by making overtures to the United States since taking office, causing tensions with mainland China. Tsai was re-elected with more than 57% of the popular vote in 2020. Her victory was interpreted as a rebuke to Beijing’s efforts to gain control of the island.

Tsai’s leadership through Covid is viewed as a global model; Taiwan implemented a stringent track and trace program in 2020 to prevent mass contagion. Shemara Wickramanayake

Featuring at 24 is Shemara Wickramanayake a Sri Lankan-Australian.

Wikramanayake was appointed as the Macquarie Group’s managing director and CEO in December 2018.
She joined Macquarie in 1987 and worked for Macquarie Capital for 20 years before becoming the head of Macquarie Asset Management in 2008.

Wikramanayake has two sons and has been open about how her husband, a former investment banker, contributed to her career by staying at home. She was born in the United Kingdom and raised in both the United Kingdom and Sri Lanka before moving to Australia with her parents when she was 13 years old. Source: Forbes
