Worlds largest Population in India by mid-2023 According to data from the United Nations, India is projected to surpass China as the world’s most populous country by mid-2023.

The estimated population of India is expected to be 1.4286 billion, which is 2.9 million more than China’s estimated population of 1.4257 billion. Both countries have accounted for more than one-third of the global population for over 70 years. China’s population has recently decreased for the first time since 1961 due to a decline in its birth rate. However, the Indian population forecast provided in the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) State of World Population report is an approximation since the country has not conducted a census since 2011.

Worlds largest Population in India

The United Nations has projected that India will surpass China as the most populous country in the world by mid-2023, with an estimated population of 1.4286 billion, surpassing China’s 1.4257 billion. However, due to the cancellation of the 2021 census because of the Covid pandemic, the UN’s Chief of Population Estimates and Projection, Patrick Gerland, notes that any numbers about India’s population are based on incomplete information. Furthermore, the UN’s estimate excludes the populations of China’s two Special Administrative Regions, Hong Kong and Macau, and the island of Taiwan, which is seen by Beijing as a part of mainland China. Additionally, both India and China have experienced declining fertility rates, which will lead to a decrease in China’s population starting next year, despite the government’s efforts to encourage couples to have more than one child. The global population surpassed 8 billion in November, but experts claim that population growth has slowed down and is currently at its slowest pace since 1950.

The fertility rates in India have dropped significantly from 5.7 births per woman in 1950 to 2.2 births per woman currently. A survey conducted by the UNFPA found that a majority of Indians believed their population was too large, with economic issues being the top concern regarding population growth. Although India is projected to overtake China as the most populous country, demographers do not see it as a cause for concern and warn against anxiety over rising numbers. They suggest that if individual rights and choices are respected, the increasing population should be viewed as a symbol of progress, development, and aspirations.
